10 Actresses Who Turned Directors

The apparent ease with which actors become directors and vice versa is not very popular amongst actresses – and as a result, successful actresses who became successful directors are just a handful.

Now that Sonam Kapoor has also voiced her interest in turning director, we bring to you 10 actresses who turned to direction.

1. Jodie Foster

Academy Award winning actress Jodie Foster turned director when she was not even 30 with an episode of the TV series ‘Tales from the Darkside’ in 1988. Her first movie, though, was ‘Little Man Tate’ in 1991. She went on to direct three more movies, ‘Home for the Holidays’ in 1995, ‘The Beaver’ (2011) and she is currently making her latest thriller ‘Money Monster’. She is one of the few successful actress-turned-directors of the world.

2. Pooja Bhatt

After an acting career that spanned over 2 decades and 30 movies – Pooja Bhatt followed in daddy Mahesh Bhatt’s footsteps and turned a director. She has directed five movies up till now, debuting with ‘Paap’ in 2003. Then followed ‘Holiday’ (2006), ‘Dhokha’ (2007), ‘Kajraare’ (2010) and the latest one was ‘Jism 2’ in 2012. This director is now in the process of starting with her next movie which is going to be a biopic of serial killer Charles Sobhraj – and might star Bonny Wright of ‘Harry Potter’ fame.

3. Courteney Cox

One of the latest Hollywood actresses to turn director is Courteney Cox of ‘Friends’ fame. Her first directorial venture was a short film called ‘The Monday before Thanksgiving’ in 2008. After that, she went on to direct a TV movie called ‘Talhotblond’ last year. Besides, she has also directed over half a dozen episodes of the TV series ‘Cougar Town’. And now, she is all set to direct her very first feature film with ‘Hello I Must Be Going’ which will star Sean William Scott.
