K-Drama Fashion: Chun Song Yi’s Style from “You Who Came From the Stars”

Lately, it seems like everyone’s been talking about “You Who Came From the Stars!” The television drama starring Jeon Ji Hyun and Kim Soo Hyun has been a big hit in not only South Korea but all around Asia. The cute and heartrending love story between 400-year-old alien Do Min Joon and lovable high-maintenance actress Chun Song Yi not only grabbed high viewer ratings, it’s also been setting style trends, with the stars’ fashion in the drama turning into the must-have items of the season. The show may have just ended but the clothes will continue to inspire our wardrobes for a long time to come.
Here are some of our favorite Chun Song Yi-style looks!
Luxe Outerwear
The winter setting of the drama showcases Song Yi’s amazing collection of outerwear. Her choice of coats and jackets reflects a more classic, architectural look. Fluid silhouettes and sharp angles created by collars and traditional double-breasted fronts are sophisticated yet still versatile enough for day-to-night wear. Plus, she’s not afraid to wear white in winter, and uses the immaculate color to juxtapose more hues and textures in her outfit and accessories. Exaggerated faux fur collars provide a lavish element to a sturdy parka or jacket, making it doubly functional and fabulous.
Bonny in Plaid
Song Yi is clearly not averse to tried-and-true patterns such as houndstooth and plaid. The houndstooth jacket and shorts with equestrian boots ensemble in episode 6 makes her look right at home in the Highlands too. The shorts add contemporary flavor to the traditional pattern, but still look smart and sharp. Her plaid coat in the first episode is also a great nod to the tartan. Throw in some argyle — a sweater or skinny pants — plus some brogues, too. There’s really nothing like some sturdy Scotch fashion sensibilities to keep looking good.
Prints Fantastic
Cold temps notwithstanding, Song Yi isn’t afraid of mixing up patterns and prints. Underneath all the classic and heavy outerwear, she combines the whimsical with more refreshing looks such as florals. Her bold graphic sweatshirts make lounging around oh-so cool while her floral dresses show off womanly curves — a shoulder here, a slim waist there. The boxy sweatshirts look wonderful paired with slim-fit or skinny pants, or with a faux leather mini skirt, and finished with leather boots.
Decreed in Tweed
Pink and tweed make for a perfect match in Song Yi’s tweed jacket and flared skirt outfit in episode 5. The classic cut of the top offsets the playful flare of the skirt, and really draws the eye towards the legs. The pink shade also makes it doubly irresistible as it’s unflinchingly feminine without going overboard. A pair of stiletto knee-high boots goes with this set while it’s still chilly, but feel free to be bodacious in electric blue stiletto pumps as well.

Finishing Touches
Classic cuts, timeless styles — so what’s better than bold red lips to cap it off? With her no-makeup look, lush red lips or a hint of orchid pink accentuates Song Yi’s features very well. Her choice of IOPE’s Color-Fit Lipstick in Violet Pink (No. 23) and Classic Red (No. 18) give her plenty of retro glamor. At home, a knotted or gold-tone leaf hair band easily makes her look put together, even in loungewear. Of course, the perfect finishing touch would be a Do Min Joon of your own but we can’t help with that.

K-Drama Fashion | Kang So Ra’s Style from “Warm and Cozy”

Ever dream of leaving it all behind and moving to a faraway island to start over? That’s exactly what the heroine of Korean TV series Warm and Cozy does. Currently airing on MBC, the drama stars Kang So Ra as Lee Jung Joo, a young woman who moves to a small town in Jeju, an island off Korea’s southern coast, after experiencing job loss and burnout in Seoul. In the quiet picturesque town, she starts anew managing a seaside restaurant with the immature owner and chef, played by Yoo Yeon Seok.
Jeju is no vacation for Jung Joo. This island girl is off the beaten path and still has a day job, so her wardrobe is both breezy and practical. Here are some basic pieces to get Lee Jung Joo’s light and clean-cut style that’s fit for both a stroll by the sea and a long day’s work!
Classic White Shirt
It’s hard to go wrong with a classic white shirt, and Jung Joo sports it in many different variations. While at her thankless job in the city, she wears the standard collared blouse, but once she’s out in Jeju, she breaks out lighter and looser styles. Lose the long sleeves and button-down for a split-neck, tab-sleeved linen or chiffon shirt that keeps you both cool and professional in the heat. For a more girlish look, go for a blouse with a mandarin collar and lace or embroidery details, or add a subtle funky touch with unexpected details like an asymmetric hem or colorful buttons. The best thing about a white shirt: it goes with just about everything so it’ll fit right into your wardrobe, no matter the style.
Flowers and Foliage
As one of Korea’s most popular tourist destinations, Jeju is famous for many beautiful natural sights, including its endless fields of rapeseed flowers. Kang So Ra shot some gorgeous promotional stills in which she stands amid a yellow-dotted sea of flowers in a sleeveless A-line dress with earthy patterns and colors. For days when you too would like to dress up and go frolicking among blossoms (or take a walk in the botanical garden), try an olive or pine green dress with leafy and floral prints and pair with beige or tan sandals. The neutral nature-inspired colors and complementary prints will make you look right at home in a field of flowers.
Denim Overalls
Overalls have been experiencing a fashion renaissance lately, and you can easily get onboard the trend without thinking too much about the styling. Just trade in a pair of blue jeans for comfy denim overalls, and you’ll be looking youthful, sporty and ready to get down to work. Pair with sneakers and a simple shirt, roll up the legs and you’re good to go. In the spring and summer, you can also opt for something shorter and more playful like short overalls or a jumper dress.
That’s a Wrap
Jung Joo keeps it mostly simple on the accessories end – she’s in the food service industry, after all – but one pretty and functional accessory she does wear often is the hair band. Besides keeping those pesky strands off your face in the hot weather, a hair band also offers a quick way to add color and character to a casual get-up. For a dash of cute, twist and tie a wire hair band into a perky bow or rabbit ears.
