Mentor, friend, guide, philosopher—a father is everything together.
He is the one who helps us becoming a man from a tender boy, as well as, leaves behind the sea of knowledge to learn from till our last breath. Drama is part of our lives, and this Father’s Day, what better to highlight it than making a list of 10 best movies about fatherhood that world cinema has to offer.
To Kill A Mockingbird
Of course one can’t top the book itself, but the film version is pretty decent, especially with Gregory Peck playing Atticus Finch. Atticus is the world’s greatest dad — not because he has managed well for himself as widower, but because he is absolutely devoted to his kids. A kind, protective and incredibly patient father, he taught his children by example. Admirable and adorable are the two words that suit Peck’s classy acting in this movie.
Big Fish
Tim Burton’s genius mixed with a tad bit of weirdness makes Big Fish a terrific movie. It focuses on the strained relationship between a father and son, where the father loves to tell fictitious stories about his past. The son can’t stand such tall tales, stops trusting his father, stops talking to his Dad and ultimately leaves. But several years later when he finds out his dad is dying, he returns home to recognise who his father really was and reconcile with his dad.
The Godfather
Two names: Marlon Brando, Al Pacino! Four words: Intense, scruffy, rugged, and the Godfather. The movie is about one man’s struggle to accept and eventually live up to the not-so-noble or honourable legacy his father has left him. But the entire trilogy can give great insights about fatherhood. The movie tells us a great deal about family and the values one must stick to till death. To quote Don Corleone, “A man who doesn’t spend time with his family can never be a real man.”
